How to Expand Your Network as a Recruiter

“It’s not about what you know, it’s who you know,” or so the saying goes. As a recruiter, your career is built on connecting the right people to the right roles, but are you applying the same focus in your career?

Being a strong recruiter relies heavily on your ability to find and meet the right people and cultivate positive, mutually beneficial working relationships. We’re all just one person away from the relationship we need to move the needle.

At IDR, our recruiters excel at bringing people together to solve a common problem, and we’ve got a few tips to help you grow your network.

Leverage Social Media

Online communities on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram provide a direct connection to other recruiters, employers, and HR professionals. There are job boards, coaching communities, local networking groups, and more right on the platforms we all visit every day, making it an easy first-line approach to expanding your network. Update your profile to accurately reflect what you do and who you most want to connect with.

Find and Join Local IRL Networking Groups

These groups take many forms, from lunch-and-learn meetings and co-working sessions to seminars and cocktail parties. Whatever your community has available, give each one a taste until you find your fit and meet the right people.

Always remember to BE a good connection for someone else to have and not just look for one you need. See Networking Tips to Kickstart Your Career for info on that.

Attend Industry Events

These events are hotbeds of activity, networking, and connection where tech professionals flock in droves. Whether you occupy a vendor stall or just work the floor with a smile and a handshake, there are never more of the right people in a room than at industry events and conferences. Don’t get stuck just shoving your business card at folks. Check out these Networking Keys for more tips.

Use Tech Tools For Networking

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools and email marketing platforms can help you stay connected and nurture the relationships you made in other places. Be sure to use these outlets consciously and keep people-focused connections at the forefront of your approach.
