Question 1: How many companies in the U.S. offer an ESOP?

Answer: 

Not enough! Data from the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) shared that in 2024, only 6,322 companies across the whole nation offered an employee stock ownership plan.[1] Additional data reveals that though the number of plans has decreased, the number of participants has increased. What does that tell you? An ESOP is a long-term financial benefit that employees seek, but not enough employers offer. 

Question 2: Does An ESOP improve your retirement projections?

Answer:

Absolutely! Surveys revealed that 91% of ESOP team members believed they could live comfortably in retirement. Contrast this with only 49% of those without an ESOP.[2] At IDR, we offer both an ESOP and a 401k, stacking employee benefits sky-high. 

Question 3: Does an ESOP contribute more to retirement than a 401k?

Answer:

In most cases, yes! According to NCEO’s latest numbers, the mean contribution from ESOP companies was 2.6 times higher than the mean contribution of traditional 401k plans offered at similar companies.[3]

Question 4: How does an ESOP impact staffing?

Answer:

Research conducted by the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations and the Employee Ownership Foundation shows that employee-owned organizations are three to four times more likely to retain staff, and only 26.9% are likely to make pay cuts (vs. standard 57.3% of traditional companies).[4]

Question 5: Does an ESOP improve productivity?

Answer:

Absolutely! In the initial year of ESOP implementation, average productivity typically improves by 4 to 5% across the board.[5] Higher productivity results in positive company outcomes and more good things a thriving company needs: higher client satisfaction, employee morale, bigger commissions, better salaries, etc. It’s all wins here!
