Overcoming Imposter Syndrome in Tech

Imposter syndrome can affect anyone in a myriad of roles at any point in their career. This confidence killer is cyclical and characterized by unrealistic perfectionism, fear of failure, denying your skill,  anxiety about success, and a constant need to be the best or the hero.

The tech space is in constant flux, always innovating and adapting and highly competitive, making it hard for even the most skilled professionals to feel “comfortable” at any given time. To help you out, we’re sharing our top four tips for building confidence and overcoming imposter syndrome.

Shift Your Perspective

Eradicate doubt as much as possible. Everyone experiences some level of fear about their performance, suitability, capacity, or fit in their career. It’s important to remember the positives with the negatives, real or perceived. Walk yourself through positive self-dialogue in moments of hesitation and inaction, recognizing your strengths as well as potential weaknesses.

Don’t Make Comparisons

Someone else’s success, real or perceived, could be due to any number of factors that may not even be within their control. Comparing yourself to others only serves to cultivate discontent and amplify fear.

When you see someone else win, celebrate with them and for them. Don’t allow yourself to sink into bitter thoughts and a sour attitude about your supposed lack of progress, success, or upward mobility.

Who you are and what you’re capable of is unique from what anyone else is or does. Embrace your differences and celebrate victories of all depth and size.

Take Inventory

One component of strong self-dialogue is to recall moments and events where you showed up at full strength, executing with confidence and expertise. Those moments exist. Think of projects you completed or led, teams you guided, and problems you solved. Can you pinpoint what contributed to your success in those moments? Replicate that.
